Toshiro Saino
The IMBER community is saddened by the passing of Toshiro Saino on 17 April 2014. Professor Saino was the Director of the Environmental Biogeochemical Cycling Research, JAMSTEC, Tokyo, Japan, and was one of the leading marine biogeochemists and ocean colour scientists in Japan. He was one of the first members of the JGOFS Scientific Steering Committee when it was established in the 1990s and served as its executive member until the program ended in the mid-2000s. He was more recently a member of the Joint SOLAS/IMBER Carbon (SIC) Research Working Group on Surface Ocean Systems. Toshiro was a great teacher and a visionary scientist. He was regarded as a very hardworking scientist, a generous host and a fun loving person. The IMBER community extends its sympathy to Toshiro’s family.
