Post-Doctoral Position: Oceanographer
The University of Southern Mississippi, Department of Marine Science
Stennis Space Center, Mississippi
Project: Computing ocean currents from space
Requirements: This interdisciplinary oceanography project is ideally suited for a person with a background in ocean physics (or other geophysical fluid dynamics) as well as some experience with satellite data and/or satellite image processing (particularly surface ocean bio-optics). Strong skills in statistical analysis and applied mathematics are preferred for this position. Expertise with ocean satellites such as MODIS, GOCI, NPP, GOES is preferred. Candidate should have a demonstrated track record of scientific communication: peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations/proceedings. We will also consider candidates with a very strong background in optics and image processing—even if this background is not directly related to oceanography.
Technical: Candidate should have computer programming competence; FORTRAN is a plus. Experience with MATLAB and ENVI/IDL image processing is also desirable. Position requires satellite image processing, writing/implementing computer code, and statistical analysis of model results--model/data comparisons.
