Ecosystem-social interactions in marginal seas

Continental marginal systems, where societal dependence for food, livelihoods and recreation is growing, are undergoing rapid change following human activity and climate change. Integrating environmental, ecological and economic knowledge of continental margin systems, and how these systems may change under different perturbation scenarios, is imperative to understand the interplays between human use of the oceans and present management strategies of marginal systems; optimising the services they provide. Lessons learned from multidisciplinary syntheses and inter-regional comparative studies of coastal socio-ecological systems will help rationalize and optimize marginal seas management approaches.
This workshop will develop a framework strategy towards our understanding of marginal social-ecological systems, guiding sustainable development of resources and advising governance regimes to facilitate sustainable governance, facilitating equitable sharing of margin resources, and evaluating alternative research approaches and partnerships that address major margin challenges.
The workshop will structure a report, to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, on the key findings of the workshop.
This workshop is being organized as a side event to the 8th China - Japan - Korea IMBeR Symposium (see http://www.imber.info/en/events/china-japan-korea-imber-symposia/cjk8 for conference details). Participants to the workshop who are also interested to attend the conference will have the benefit of having their conference registration fee paid by the State Key Laboratory for Estuarine and Coastal Research.

Richard is a marine biogeochemist studying the system interplay between ocean chemistry, marine ecosystems, climate change and socio-ecology. His involvement in continental margins work includes socio-ecological studies of ocean acidification and climate change in Arctic and Chinese marginal seas.
Su Mei Liu
Ocean University of China
Su Mei has served as a Scientific Steering Committee member from 2010-2015. Her focus is on nutrient cycles and the interactions between nutrients and food webs, environmental evolution, silicon and atmospheric nutrient deposition. Su Mei will coordinate the CMWG activities towards improved understanding of the socio-ecological systems of the Chinese marginal seas.

The mission of Future Earth Coasts is to support adaptation to global change by linking natural and social sciences with knowledge of coastal communities at global, regional and local scales. Future Earth Coasts operates as an international research project and global expert network exploring the drivers and social-environmental impacts of global environmental change in coastal zones.

The SKLEC-NIWA Centre was set up in 2015, based on the Memorandum of Understanding between ECNU and Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), Norway. The objective of this centre is to deliver high quality, relevant new understanding of the land-ocean continuum towards optimal, sustainable use of coastal and marine systems under increasing environmental and climate change.
