About the event
Fundamental research on sustainable marine ecosystem is an important scientific issue in the new century, also represents a significant developing trend in marine science. Over the past few decades, the structure and function of the global marine ecosystem have undergone important changes to varying degrees, meanwhile human activities have had a significant impact on the sustainable development of continental margin systems. This workshop will explore in depth the changes to environment, ecosystem and economic factors of the marginal seas driven by multi-stressors, in order to understand the human impact on the ecological environment and the interrelationship with management policies. With the knowledge gained from this interdisciplinary research and inter-regional comparative studies, it will be helpful to optimize marginal seas management approaches. The workshop aims to promote our understanding of coastal social-ecological systems, to guide sustainably management of marine resources, and to evaluating alternative methods and techniques towards adaptive management and governance.

Aims of the workshop:
1. Develop a framework strategy to study ocean health and sustainability in Chinese marginal seas;
2. Prioritise research approaches that the Chinese marginal seas case study should focus on;
3. Promote interactions between different disciplines, including marine science (climate/ocean, earth sciences, environmental sciences, biogeochemistry/ecology), biological resources, economy, and management. And build a platform to facilitate cooperation and enable more valuable synthesis outcomes.

LIU Su Mei Ocean University of China Su Mei was an IMBeR Scientific Steering Committee member from 2010-2015. Her research focuses on nutrient cycles and the interactions between nutrients and food webs, environmental evolution, silicon and atmospheric nutrient deposition. Su Mei will coordinate the CMWG activities towards improved understanding of the socio-ecological systems of the Chinese marginal seas. |

WU Ying East China Normal University Ying’s research focuses on the composition and biogeochemistry of organic matter from source to sink, using isotopes and biomarkers to trace the sources, fluxes, cycles and transformations. Ying was actively involved in Chinese GLOBEC/IMBER projects from the very beginning. She is currently a member of the IMBeR Scientific Steering Committee and is the contact of IMBeR-endorsed project LEDS. |
