Integrated marine biosphere research, batiks and big waves at the IMBeR summer school

The sixth IMBeR ClimEco summer school was held at the Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia last month. It brought together 60 participants and lecturers from a range of natural, social and economic marine science disciplines, to consider Transdisciplinary approaches for sustainable oceans.

The participants (MSc and PhD students, and early career researchers) hailed from 24 countries and several of the more than 17 500 islands that make up Indonesia. Their research backgrounds were equally wide-ranging including medicine, law, fisheries science, economics, policy and resource management, resulting in some excellent discussions.

In addition to presentations on a variety of topics by the interdisciplinary team of lecturers, the summer school included workshops on writing good grant proposals and research papers, training on social science techniques and methods for natural scientists, and communicating science on social media.

There were plenty of social events, including a mid-week a visit to the magnificent Borobudur Temple and the black beach and big waves at Parang Tritis. The campus provided an excellent opportunity to have an outdoor evening poster session, that one participant described as the “best poster session ever! ” João Garcia Rodrigues received the Best Poster prize for his poster on Human wellbeing in a changing marine socio-ecological system.

If you missed ClimEco6, you will have to wait until 2020 for the next IMBeR summer school, but it will definitely be worth waiting for!
