Call to Join the IMECaN Organising Committee

[Information as a pdf]

The Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network (IMECaN) is inviting applications from early career researchers (ECRs) to join its organising committee following IMECaN terms of reference.

IMECaN aims to provide an open networking platform for ECRs to develop collaborations; provide training and development in areas not traditionally provided through formal education and training programmes; and provide leadership opportunities for ECR marine researchers, particularly from developing nations (or the Global South). This presents ECRs with an opportunity to become more involved in IMBeR’ activities, and collaborate more broadly with interdisciplinary scientists from around the world. As an organising committee member, you will be invited to take part in planning and organising IMECaN activities, such as workshops and seminars, and helping develop and attend IMBER activities, such as international conferences and workshops. More information on IMECaN activities can be found here.

Applications are open to all marine ECRs, including but not limited to marine science graduate students (Masters and PhDs), and early career researchers (less than eight years post-PhD and less than six years since their first academic appointment- either full-time or part-time, with research as the primary function[1]). IMECaN is committed to fostering an inclusive culture which promotes equality, values diversity and maintaining an environment in which the rights and dignity of the committee and IMECaN members are respected. We are aware that intersectional inequity is pervasive across marine science and that individuals with minoritized statuses face the most significant challenges (e.g., due to their race, ethnicity, nationality, age, geographic location, sexual orientation and disabilities). ECRs from industry, government, consultancy and NGOs are also encouraged to apply.

To apply, please send the following information to imecan@dal.ca:

  • Brief CV ( 2 pages)
  • Motivation statement (~200 words) with information on how your skills and knowledge will contribute to IMECaN activities, why you would like to join the organising committee, and what kind of activities you would see yourself contributing towards.

Please include “IMECaN Organising committee application” as the subject line in your email.

IMECaN welcomes applications from all sections of the community and we consider all areas of inclusion. We particularly encourage applications from ECRs originating from developing countries or the Global South, as this is an area where marine science needs to make the greatest improvement. Prioritizing this factor is not to the exclusion of other identities and initiatives.

Expression of Interest submissions will close on September 30th, 2023. Applicants will be notified of the outcome via email. For more information on being involved in the organising committee, please contact imecan@dal.ca
