Session 7: IMBeR Strategic Partnership: Recognizing Interfaces and Building Synergies with Relevant Projects and UN Ocean Decade Programmes
About this session
Marine scientific research strives to address complex and interconnected challenges, international collaborations across projects, programmes, organizations, and initiatives are essential to developing Earth System views. This session will explore the boundaries, connections, and synergies between IMBeR and other relevant scientific efforts within Global Research Projects of SCOR and Global Research Networks of Future Earth, international initiatives of the UN Ocean Decade family, and other potential partners.
Actionable recommendations are encouraged to reflect on how IMBeR’s interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary marine research has been effectively integrated with the specialized expertise of partner initiatives to advance our understanding of ocean-human sustainability, ecosystem resilience, and science-policy engagement.
A set of indicators will be identified to examine the relationship between IMBeR and its partners for 2016-2025, to identify remaining frontiers, and to pave the way for developing a new science plan and implementation strategy on joint scientific research, capacity building, and science-policy approaches in the coming five or ten years.
This session is intended for researchers, program managers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs engaged in marine science and sustainability initiatives.
Convenors
GiHoon Hong, East China Normal University
Professor Hong is a low-temperature geochemist. He participated in WESTPAC, LOICZ, JGOFS, and GEOTRACES. He was chair of the Scientific Groups (2012-2014) and chair of COP (2016-2017) of the London Convention and its Protocol, and president of the Ocean Science Institute in S Korea (2014-2017). He is interested in bringing scientific facts and knowledge to societal decision processes in domestic and global settings. He believes that scientific research on our surrounding natural and manmade environment is essential to solving the challenges of emerging contaminants, enhancing values of natural resources, global climate change, and ultimately advancing human civilization by achieving sustainable development. He is a professor at the East China Normal University and the Strategy Director of the International Project Office for Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR).
Fang Zuo, East China Normal University
Fang Zuo serves as the Executive Officer at the IMBeR International Project Office, hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University. With over 14 years of experience supporting IMBER and IMBeR initiatives, she has organized numerous international meetings, workshops and capacity-building activities, fostering global collaboration and advancing partnerships across the Asia-Pacific Region, the Middle East, and Africa. Fang has also contributed to the synthesis and publication of technical reports and articles on training methodologies in international journals. As an Early Career Researcher pursuing an on-the-job Ph.D. since 2022, her research explores the synergies of international scientific projects in higher education and life-cycle capacity development beyond formal degree programs.
