The SIOA working group was established by IMBER (2005-2015) and its sister project SOLAS in 2009, to coordinate international research efforts and synthesis activities in ocean acidification.
Having successfully completed its initial mandate, and acknowledging the vast ocean acidification research being undertaken around the world, the SIOA members facilitated the establishment of the Ocean Acidification International Co-ordination Centre (OA-ICC) in 2012, to coordinate, promote and facilitate global ocean acidification activities. IMBeR (2016-2025) and SOLAS continue to sponsor the activities of the SIOA.
