IMBIZO7 is an endorsed United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development activity.

IMBeR IMBIZOs are really great conferences. They comprise three parallel but interacting workshops. We have found that the optimal number of participants is around 40 per workshop – so submit an abstract to be one of the 120 IMBIZO7 attendees!

Each of the three IMBIZO7 workshops addresses a key area for ocean sustainability through an interdisciplinary approach. Workshops will highlight current and emerging research and explore potential solutions. The overall IMBIZO7 theme is Transitioning towards sustainable ocean governance by 2030 because 2030 is a target year for multiple global sustainability initiatives, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and the Global Biodiversity Framework 2030. While each participant will be enrolled in one of the three workshops for the full duration of the IMBIZO, they will engage with the other workshops through regular integrating activities.
Workshop 1 focuses on the growing challenge of managing eutrophication in a world with growing populations and increasing use of fertilisers. Policy responses need to balance the impacts on biodiversity and the economic and societal development that leads to eutrophication.
Workshop 2 focuses on how to use social-ecological modelling approaches to study different future pathways for transformative changes in the ocean, and aims to develop a framework for better understanding how social-ecological models can be used to inform transformative management actions towards sustainable future oceans.
Workshop 3 addresses the challenge of transforming governance for sustainable coastal fisheries and aquaculture, which provide livelihoods and food security for millions of people globally. The necessary transformations will be framed in reference to emerging targets for implementation and action such as the global 2030 agendas and targets listed above.

IMBIZO7 will have three concurrent but interacting workshops:
Workshop 1: Science based adaptive management and policy responses to the causes and consequences of eutrophication.

Workshop 3: Governance transformations for resilient fisheries and aquaculture: Progressions, challenges and opportunities.

IMBeR’s Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network (IMECaN) are organising an event on 22 September, the day before the start of IMBIZO7. This event is open to all IMBIZO7 participants, not only students and early career researchers.

IMBeR is committed to promoting ocean literacy and geographic, gender and generational diversity. To this end, IMBIZO7 and the IMECaN Early Career Researchers’ event will also include a range of participatory activities including capacity building, mentoring and exchanging successful examples of increasing diversity and inclusion.

This workshop will explore the role of transdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity in the journeys of Early Career Researchers (ECRs), focusing on the science-policy-society interface for achieving sustainable ocean governance by 2030. We will discuss challenges of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work, opportunities for co-creation, deconstructing transdisciplinary terminology, and navigating interdisciplinary spaces from individual to institutional levels as an ECR. Participants will exchange experiences and discuss practical solutions to the challenges faced in transdisciplinary research environments. No prior expertise on the workshop topics is needed; all ECRs and more experienced scientists are welcome.
