The IMBeR observers, Peng Lian (Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Beijing) and Pavel Semkin (V.I. Il’ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute, Vladivostok), for the PICES-2026 Annual Science Meeting recently held a preparation meeting to discuss the scientific programme, observer activities, and opportunities for future collaboration.
The meeting reviewed the new PICES mission and the evolving scope of PICES-2026, which places greater emphasis on actionable science, interdisciplinary and transboundary research, the inclusion of human dimensions, recent advancements in technologies, and communication to policy and decision makers.
Participants also discussed several scientific topics that attracted considerable attention during recent activities and offer strong opportunities for collaboration with the community, including:
- marine heatwaves at higher latitudes and their impacts on marine ecosystems;
- biogeochemistry, trace elements, and glacier-derived inputs;
- comparative studies of natural and human-influenced coastal systems in the North Pacific;
- Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) activities, including webinars, training courses, doctoral forums, and international research cruises.
The observers also discussed preparations for the IMBeR poster and presentations at the PICES-2026 Annual Science Meeting.
