Expertise Gaps in 2023

After Alistair rotates off the SSC at the end of 2022, and with the previous departure of Jeomshik, this figure shows the remaining expertise as represented through the expertise survey. It can be seen that for all elements, we have at least two SSC members who have pertinent expertise:

Call for nominations

Typically, the Chair drafts the call for nominations with the help of the IPOs. The text is quite standard except when listing the expertise that is sought. Confirming this expertise is guided by the gaps in coverage of the science plan – recently done systematically by the expertise gap analysis – and by suggestions from the SCC which may include emergent or innovative disciplines/expertise that had not previously been considered or have become prioritized.

Defining the expertise sought may involve consultation with the Executive Committee or more broadly with the SSC.

Selection committee

Once nominations have been received, a selection committee (typically the Chair + Exec + reps from IPOs) rank the nominations according to the criteria set out in the call for nominations.

Is a shortlist is presented to the SSC or a list (or single name) of proposed candidates to join the SSC?

The SSC are then asked to approve the committee’s proposed candidate(s).
